Early Life
Born in 1943, Aretha Franklin hails from Memphis, Tennessee. Her father was the influential pastor of the New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit. Both her father and mother were nationally recognized gospel singers, but her mother unfortunately deserted the family when Franklin was just six years old. Franklin and her two sisters, Erma and Caroline, sang at their father’s church and her first recordings were made there when she was just fourteen years old. Although her family was one of Detroit’s most prominent African-American families, her father was reluctant to allow her to sign a contract with the just-emerging Motown record label.
